There is no single right answer: it depends on what you want to do. Rajasthan has real extremes, and each season favours different places.
October to March: the main season
This is the classic time for forts, cities and desert trips, with comfortable days and cool evenings. December and January can be cold at night, so pack a warm layer.
April to June: heat and hill stations
Daytime heat can be intense on the plains, so plan early starts and rest in the afternoon. Mount Abu is the natural escape, and it is at its busiest during this period.
July to September: the green months
The monsoon transforms Hadoti and Mewar. Garadia Mahadev, Bundi and Udaipur all look wonderful, though you should allow for rain and slippery paths.
Plan around festivals
Festivals are a highlight but they also bring crowds, and demand for rooms and vehicles rises.
- Pushkar fair, around Kartik Purnima
- Dussehra in Kota, a major local event
- Navratri at temples across the region
- Ajmer Urs, on dates that shift each year
